ONE COUNTRY TRYING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
No longer should life-changing global education opportunities be only for the privileged few. Check out how one country is trying to make global service-learning for everyone.
YMCA PORTADOWN GSL PROJECT
Global Service learning Project - Washington DC
Global Service learning is a youth-led programme, that promotes active citizenship, enhancing the social and personal development of young people and assisting them to make a positive contribution to their own and other communities.
The ultimate goal is to develop active citizens, therefore every programme has a significant element of social action and community service. This includes an opportunity to visit the United States of America for one week and engage in an international community service-learning programme.
The programme recruits young people aged 15 – 18 years, with some previous experience of cross-cultural visits, ready to progress to something more challenging, which will support their development and ability to contribute towards a social action programme in their own community.
Although participation is voluntary, young people should understand at the outset both the challenges and benefits of involvement in the programme, so that they develop the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to tackle the issues that are important to them within their community.
A bespoke accredited programme, ‘Creating Responsible Citizens’ is offered through the Open College Network Northern Ireland (OCN NI) and uses a wide range of artefacts to collate evidence and promote learning.
The concluding element is a focussed reflection and social action programme over 6 months, with a minimum of 20 hours of engagement in practical social action activities. This is undertaken in the local community to promote active citizenship, leadership development and raise awareness of local issues and the contribution young people make towards change.
Young people must remain committed to attending all elements of the programme to gain maximum benefits.
